What to do When your Cat is in Heat ?

Before we discuss what we need to do when our cat is in heat, we need to understand what this means first.

All-female cats, at some point, in their lives, usually when they turn one year old, will have the urge to procreate. The cat can stay in heat for four to six days and can happen in several cycles. The heat cycle can stop when they mated or occur after a while when the urge has subsided.

Cats can go in heat as early as four months.  Below are the signs to spot on if indeed our cat is in heat.

How do you know that your cat is in heat?

  1. Cat becomes overly affectionate. She rubs her body all over objects and sometimes to you.
  2. She wants affection, and when you rub her, she will assume a mating position.
  3. The distinct sign is the female call. The female cat creates a distinctive sound that is loud and long to call upon the male cats around the area. It is like telling them that she is ready to mate.

When you notice two or all the signs above with your female cats, chances are you have a fur baby that is ready to mate.

Also, it is essential to note that male cats will respond to these calls. Male cats will become territorial and spray their urines on objects to mark their territory. They will also start responding to the female cat by producing a distinct growl by themselves.

What to do when your cat is in heat?

These are the things you can do.

Spay your cat as early as six months; check with the vet first for this. Spaying your cat will prevent them from going in heat. There are also health benefits of Spaying your cat that we will talk about in another post.

Let your cat mate. When she mates and become pregnant, She will not go in heat in her pregnancy days.

Whichever way you choose to handle a cat in heat will depend on you and your goal as a fur parent.
